Tibo Dennistoun

Hello and welcome to the final 'Coffice' Review! Today, I'm reviewing Tibo, a contemporary style coffee shop/cafe based on Duke Street in Dennistoun, just a 10-15 minute walk from the university and city centre.  I was recommended this coffee shop by one of my cousins who praised their great coffee, tasty food and chilled vibe. After my 15 minute walk, I saw a Tibo Takeaway sign on my right hand side with the shutters closed and instantly regretted my decision to walk all this way for a coffee. But before turning back, luckily, I looked up and to my left was the Tibo Bistro, and to my relief it was open! So keep in mind, if you're thinking of visiting, they have a takeaway shop and a sit-in cafe - if one is closed the other might be open. When I was seated I asked to be sat next to a plug for my laptop. There are limited seats with plug sockets nearby, and the ones that did have plug sockets were already taken, so unfortunately I couldn't get sat next to a plug to ...

Spitfire Espresso Candleriggs

Hello and welcome to the first COFFICE Review!

On Friday I had two online classes and one on-campus tutorial back-to-back. So, I headed into town, and began my search for a suitable coffice!

I made my way along Ingram Street and passed the typical places – Pret, Tinderbox, iCafe - but I was looking for something a bit different.

I felt like I had walked too far. After sleeping in and being up all night with my three-year-old I was in desperate need of a coffee. So, I made a U-turn and that’s when I spotted Spitfire Espresso. On the corner of Ingram Street and Candleriggs with wooden benches sitting outside. It was busy for 9am on a Friday morning so I took this as a good sign and headed in.

Spitfire is a non-traditional espresso bar with a chilled, laid-back atmosphere, 30s style interior and jazzy background music. I sat at the bar stools by the window where I could people watched while I zoned in and out throughout my zoom lectures. Despite still finding zoom lectures particularly underwhelming, I felt more motivated to work than I would have in the house - even with the background music and the buzz of people meeting for coffees and breakfast.

Speaking of breakfast… the first thing I did was order a cappuccino and poached eggs on toast which definitely hit the spot. I probably chose the plainest option considering the creativity of the menu (which offers plenty for veggies!) Spitfire offers all-day breakfasts, sandwiches, a variety of different coffees/hot drinks and to top it off they also offer a mix of alcoholic beverages if that’s the kind of thing you’re needing to get through your next zoom call.

In terms of remote working, this espresso bar is a great spot, especially for strath students with it being a 5 min walk from the university. They offer free WIFI and accessible plug sockets to charge your phone or laptop and to top it off the staff were all super friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back here, whether it’s to work remotely or just to try something different on their menu. The only downside, of course, was the trek back up that hill to get to my tutorial!

Costa Coffee

Hello and welcome back to the COFFICE Review! Today I am reviewing a classic and well-known coffee shop – Costa. In this blog, I have chosen to review a Costa local to me as my classes are taking place online throughout COP26. However, as a big chain, there are Costa stores dotted about everywhere. If you’re looking for somewhere quick and easy to get a bit of work done, there will often be a Costa nearby.    Costa is one of the typical stores that come to mind when thinking of coffee shops. There are at least 3 Costa coffee shops in Glasgow City Centre as well as a number of Costas across the central belt but of course, services and facilities vary across stores depending on their size and location.    The positive about going to a chain coffee shop is that you kind of have an idea of what to expect. I went to Costa knowing I would have access to the internet, access to a plug socket, and, of course, access to coffee and cake. At 10am I opted for coffee and ma...

Welcome to the COFFICE Review

Hello and welcome to the COFFICE Review!  I  am a third-year business student at the University of Strathclyde, and as part of my marketing course, we have been tasked with creating a blog. I have hummed and hawed with different ideas, but I have finally decided to focus this blog on something very relevant and fairly new to a lot of us... Throughout this blog I will be reviewing a number of coffee shops (and/or) cafes around the city centre, deciding whether or not they are suitable and can be used as a remote working area/office – hence the title ‘coffice’ (coffee, office… get it?) Over the past few years, and with a particular shout out to Covid-19, remote working has become more and more popular within the business world, encouraging a demand for remote and co-working spaces across the city centre – which I am looking forward to exploring. In all honesty, working from home was a struggle for myself, as I know it has been for many others – especially in peak lockdown. With ...
